AS IF IN A DREAM 2024 / video / color / 8:05 min. ‘As if in a Dream’ is a short film showing life in a temple in Yamaguchi, Japan, inspired by the daily recurring rhythm and tasks which hold their own quiet beauty. Sasaki Ritsuko, a 95-year-old woman, lives in the temple, under the care of the head monk. Although she can no longer walk upright, she continues to take part in daily routines by cleaning the floor every morning. Sitting on the ground, she pushes herself forward with her hands, following the same path each day. Living alongside someone of an older age shapes the pace of life in the temple, creating steady, recurring patterns and routines that become meaningful over time. This work was part of a residency through Van Gogh Artist in Residence . Short excerpt from video. She uses the camera as a transformative tool for exploring different layers. “A man sets out to draw the world. As the years go by, he draws a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, instruments, stars, horses, and individuals. A short time before he dies, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the lineaments of his own face.” Jorge L. Borges. Anna was born in 1985 in Hoorn, right at the Lake IJssel, in the northwest of the Netherlands. After an academic studies in psychology she continued studying art. - INNER LANDSCAPES | ANNA SWAGERMAN
INNER LANDSCAPES (PAISAJES INTERNOS) 2022 / video / color / 8:34 min. 'Inner Landscapes' is a ten-minute short film shot on the private property where Spanish painter Antoni Tàpies lived and worked. His studio, surrounded by nature, faces the black mountain in the Barcelona province. The voice in the film reflects the perspectives of different people encountered in this landscape. This work was part of a collaboration with the Kupferstichkabinett National Museum in Berlin, Germany. “Looking at things in a certain way. Looking at light, motion, water, the horizon. Matter is like a mirror. Observing the landscape, I felt new feelings. Sometimes I try to put a name but I can’t; it’s a new experience. Every time I watch the landscape, there’s a change inside...” Short excerpt from video.
